Colonial Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Va., 1938. Called “America’s First Cookbook”, this book is in very good condition. Very light wear considering it is printed in 1938. This treasure measures 4 1/2" x 7". I copy here from the Title Page in Old English text: “Being a collection of upwards of 500 of the moft ancient and approv'd recipes in Virginia. Illustrated. An account of Virginia hofpitality; treatifes on the various branches of cookery; an account of health drinking; fome confiderations of the obfervation of Chriftmas in Virginia, with traditional recipes for this seafon; with the author's explanation of the method of collecting and adapting thefe choice recipes; and an alphabetical index to the whole. hardcover.” As the style of the time This gem is bound with calves leather. Which is in very good shape. Very slight fraying around the edges. The binding is very secure. No tears or rips of the pages.
The Recipes: Squab & Cimlin, Escalloped Tomatoes, Salmi of Wild Duck, Pink & colored Pancakes, Sweet Potato Biscuits…these and many more all delightfully instructed with old Americana flair.
The Lithographs: The lithographs of old Virginia lifestyle stand alone in their beauty and more than out weigh the price of this cookbook. “The illustrations, by Elmo Jones, of Richmond, Virginia are newly drawn in fimulation of the Technique of eighteenth Century Engravers and are reproduced with line cuts”
The illustrations are titled: The Kitchen of the Governor’s Palace, The Market Square Tavern Kitchen, The Blair Kitchen and Herb Garden, A Moral and Physical Thermometer & The King’s Arms.
